SMC Barricade notes
technology December 31st, 2001
I just loaded AMIT’s 1.94a firmware onto my SMC Barricade 7004BR firewall. I’m really impressed with this little box – for $79, I got a 4 port ethernet switch with NAT firewall and print server. Since I’ve owned this unit, the firmware has expanded to include 20 virtual servers (up from 10), virtual server port ranges, performance increases, enhancements for PPTP and IPSEC support, and now inbound and outbound packet filtering. Unfortunately, they’ve been discontinued – the new model, the SMC 7004ABR has different firmware and a different featureset. After watching the firmware mature on the old model, I’m hesitant to upgrade to a new model with new firmware.
If you can find an old 7004BR on closeout, buy it – And flash the firmware with the newest version from AMIT (the OEM) or SMC.
I’ve put up a page listing some SMC Barricade-specific tips and tricks I’ve learned at http://www.kataan.org/techref/barricade.html
