Chased away

I went to shoot some rainy day lunchtime photos this afternoon. Saw a wonderful shot, an ornate wrought iron door framing a christmas tree in a small law firm office.

Standing in the middle of an alleyway, I had time for one shot before the receptionist opened the door and said “May I help you?” in that condescending tone that implies anything but helpfulness.

I said “No, I’m just taking a picture of your christmas tree.”

“Oh, I wish you wouldn’t.”

‘It’s a beautiful shot…”

“Sorry…”

Mind you, this is a block away from an art school that regularly sends out droves of students with 35mm cameras onto the landscape. And I was standing on a public street taking pictures of a public storefront. And they had the big tree with lights on display in their front window, obviously for public appreciation.

This was a semi-polite exchange, but it reminds me to carry a copy of The Photographer’s Rights with me when I shoot.
