Greetings from officeland!
I’m finishing up an office move. Friday night was a server move and turnup on a 2 mbit ethernet circuit, an internet T1 and 2 point to point circuits. We assembled 40 servers in racks and broke out of here around 3am. Back in the office yesterday around 9:00am to build some *nice* office switches (Cisco 3750s as core switches, 2950s in the closets, dual gigabit uplinks) and get VPN tunnels to our other offices up and running.
Yipes 2 mbit ethernet works out to $400/month, pretty snappy.
My new server room kicks ass- we have 21 racks, with 10 or so spare, a 24KVA UPS piped into 4plex jacks on each rack, patch panels in each rack (no more loose cat 5 cables strung from rack to rack) and a 10 ton HVAC unit keeping everything nice and cool.
We ditched a Norstar KSU for a “real” Northern Telecom Meridian 1 Option 11C PBX. Oops, I mean a Nortel Networks Succession 3.0 voice gateway. This is a phone system I’ve worked on for over 10 years and know like the back of my hand.
Today we’re going to finish the desktop connections and printers and try to break out early for the Raiders/Bucs game tonight.
My no-starbucks rule is bending - the only place open out here on the weekends is Starbucks.
We’re out in SOMA, near Mission, and the area has that odd quiet feeling on late afternoon weekends. Many stores are closed, the sun is behind the buildings by 3:00pm, and there’s a certain gritty feeling to the area. I brought my camera along, hoping to get some photos after work adjourns.
It will be nice to finally be in one office again; I’ve been walking at least 5km/day for the past 3 weeks!
