Where did the weekend go?

I had a great weekend; Friday I took a photo walk on my lunch hour up to Chinatown in San Francisco, on a quest for Lucky film. I thought Chinatown would be an ideal place to find Chinese film, but all I found was import Kodak and Fuji film.

Saturday, I went to the boardwalk, shot 3 rolls of film (one LOMO, one plastic camera, one SLR roll — already on their way to York Photo, a record for me!)

Sunday was spent picking up around the house, running, walking dogs and buying film and photo boxes.

My Nikon D70 is still in the shop, in the meantime I’m going through a film phase again. Despite the coolness factor of digital, I still love the feel of mechanical camera controls in my hand, know there’s a material process going on to make the image I capture, and I look forward to the suspense of waiting for my prints. Digital offers a lot more convenience, but I find myself taking much better pictures when I compose carefully and think through the shot. With digital, I find myself taking a shotgun approach - take 70 shots and one is sure to turn out!

In the meantime, I’m shooting with a 30 year old mechanical SLR, a similarly old rangefinder, slightly newer Soviet technology and crappy plastic “giveaway” cameras from about the same timeframe - and loving it.
