Interesting new cameras
Ricoh has come out with the Ricoh GR Digital. It reminds me of an Olympus Stylus Epic, a no-nonsense camera built around a good quality, prime focus lens. I always like shooting with a prime (non-zoom) lens, most of the pictures on my site were taken with a 28mm or 50mm lens.
I compose a shot much better when I have one focal length and I need to move around to get the right perspective - I spend more time on composition and less on framing a shot. Since prime lenses are usually much faster than zoom lenses, allowing me to take pictures in lower light with less blur. wide-open apertures allow me to use shallow depth of field to isolate a subject. (One problem with point and shoot digitals is the difficulty in achieving shallow depth of field, but that’s a topic for another blog post.)
Another interesting camera that snuck into the market without me noticing is the Leica M8, a M-series digital rangefinder. It uses retrofitted M-series bayonet lenses, uses an optical viewfinder, and has 10.3 megapixel resolution. It’s a Leica, though - $4295 list price. Ouch!
The Samsung NV7 looks interesting - smart retro styling, 7 megapixels, huge display, image stabilization, and a 7x zoom. My venerable old Canon Powershot SD110 feels ancient by today’s standards.
