Permalinks and Wordpress

I’ve spent the morning trying to figure out how to get my Wordpress Blog, which is mounted in my home directory, to work with pretty permalinks (I.E. http://www.kataan.org/postname.html instead of http://www.kataan.org/?p=222). The Wordpress mod_rewrite rules work, but since Wordpress is installed in the root directory, the mod_rewrite rule breaks images in the gallery as well as my LOMO pages and images on the side, like my Dreamhost link button.

I’m trying to get my blog noticed on Google more, and try to get some of the technical bits I’ve posted here floating up a little higher in the googlesphere. With the old postnum-based URLs, it’s hard to get noticed. With meaningful postname-based URLs and proper post naming, Google ranking is much easier.

I could try re-installing Wordpress into a blog directory, but that’s way too much work for today.

I don’t follow. What’s the problem with the options provided at /wp-admin/options-permalink.php ?

Nothing is wrong per se, but the image links are broken by the rewrite rules that are put in.

Bummer, because part of the issue there has to do with search engine ranking — a keyworded URL ranks higher than a numeric one.
