“Posterous is the dead simple place to post everything… Just email us.”
journal July 8th, 2009
I created a posterous account and am having a LOT of fun with it. Posterous reminds me of a moblog service from a few years back, but it’s more than that. Posterous allows you to post almost any content to it via email or the web.
Posterous also allows autoposting to Facebook, Livejournal, Blogger, WordPress blogs, Flickr, Twitter and identi.ca.
They support some interesting features like custom domains – if you don’t want http://username.posterous.com and you have control of your DNS, you can point any name to their servers and register it. I borrowed my URL, http://lowresolution.kataan.org and pointed it to my posterous account. They also support Google Analytics, if you’re tracking your blog traffic, and import from several blog formats, including WordPress and TypePad. (I’m tempted to port a copy of this blog over and see how it looks!)
Posterous stores images, up to 1GB total. They say if you need more space, ask.
The service is free now, and they say there will always be a free version with a more featureful paid version in the future.
The first comparison that comes to mind is Flickr. I’ve been lukewarm on Flickr; I like the speed with which it serves images, but it feels out of place as a blog or a community. Posterous feels more blog-like to me, and seems like it’ll be a better environment for expression rather than just serving images.
Check it out.
