There’s a great article on magneticmag.com about the allure of plastic cameras – great links, camera resources, and example photos…

Reason # 3

Because film has a very different look from digital. Plastic cameras quite happily fill the needs of people who don’t want their pictures to look like everybody else’s. Think about it—when you go on social media and see the digital photos posted up there, don’t they have more or less the same look about them? There’s a reason for this: these cameras are specifically designed to deliver the same type of image. Sure, the colors might be a bit different here and there, but they still look basically the same. On the other hand, most film has a very warm, retro ambiance when used inside a plastic camera, far removed from that of digital. On a similar issue, black & white film frankly leaves digital B&W in the dust. There’s simply no comparison, and black & white film lends itself extremely well to plastic cameras. Now, there are some who ask, can’t you just recreate all those visual aspects with Photoshop over a digital image? Well, yes you could…but unless you’re a total computer techie who loves that kind of stuff, why would you want to spend all that time doing that? It makes much more sense to simply create the same thing in three seconds with the click of a shutter, doesn’t it?

Gerber is one of my favorite multitool companies; I like the fact that they’re always experimenting with clever (but rarely gimmicky) ways to extend the functionality of pocket tools. Case in point: this forthcoming “Steady” tool, which incorporates a tripod with a standard camera screw-mount. I really miss carrying multitools wherever I go, but the combination of insane, overreaching anti-knife laws in the UK and frequent, expensive airport checkpoint confiscations (I forget stuff sometimes!) has put my multitool in dry-dock beside my desk. The Steady is due in 2012 — maybe by then we’ll live in a world that acknowledges that banning edges from public places isn’t necessary or sufficient for safety.

An Instawalk is an Instagram themed photo walk. Users are encouraged to shoot, process, and upload their photos as the walk is happening. If you haven’t done one yet, I highly recommend it. It’s a really bizarre experience to be seeing what your fellow photographers are seeing as the walk is happening.

Our next Instawalk in San Francisco is June 11th. We’ll meet at 11am at Dragon’s Gate (the cool sculpture at Bush and Grant St). Then we’ll walk through Chinatown for a couple of hours before ending up at a bar, where we’ll share iPhone photography tips.

As an extra bonus, we’ve teamed up with Photojojo for this Instawalk. They’ll be bringing 20 of their iPhone lenses (including the popular Fisheye lens) to lend out to our group for the walk. I know they’ll have some additional goodies with them too!

If you’d like to hear about these events sooner, or help plan your own, join our InstawalkSF Google Group.

This event is open to everyone, iPhones are not required IF you are uploading to Instagram, please use the #instawalksf hashtag. If you can’t make it, you can watch the event online as it happens.

Sealed off for nearly a decade, the folks at SilentUK have finally uncovered London’s secret ‘Mail Rail’, first opened in the 1920s after extensive and complicated construction. Closed down due to lack of use and high costs, the elaborate underground system became an urban legend for adventurers. For more photos, history, and the full story of the find, see: http://www.silentuk.com/?p=2792

From Wikipedia:

In 1911 a plan evolved to build an underground railway 6½ miles long from Whitechapel to Paddington serving the main sorting offices along the route; even then, traffic congestion was causing unacceptable delays. The contract to build the tunnels was won by John Mowlem and Company. Construction of the tunnels started in February 1915 from a series of shafts dug along the route. Most of the line was constructed using the Greathead shield system, with limited amounts of hand-mining for connecting tunnels at stations.

The main line has a single tube of 9 ft diameter with two tracks. Just before stations, tunnels diverge into two single-track 7 ft diameter tunnels. These then connect to two parallel station tunnels of 25 ft diameter. The main tube is underground at a depth of around 70 ft.[5] Stations are at a much shallower depth, with a 1-in-20 gradient into the stations. The gradients assist in slowing the trains when approaching stations, and accelerating them away. There is also less distance to lift mail from the stations to the surface. At Oxford Circus the tunnel runs close to the Bakerloo line tunnel of the London Underground.

During 1917, work was suspended due to the shortage of labour and materials. By June 1924 track laying had started. In February 1927 the first section, between Paddington and the West Central District Office, was made available for training. The line became available for the Christmas parcel post in 1927 and letters were carried from February 1928.

In 1954 plans developed for a new Western District Office at Rathbone Place which required a diversion to the line. The diversion came into operation in 1958.[6] It was not until 3 August 1965 that the new station and office was opened by the Postmaster General of the United Kingdom, Anthony Wedgwood-Benn. The disused section was used as a store tunnel; some parts of it still have the track in place.

Kyle Cassidy’s take on the iPhone’s camera, from his iPhonetography site:

THE CAMERA THAT COMES WITH THE iPHONE IS TERRIBLE

Many people decry it’s smallish megapixel count (3), but really, as any serious digital photographer will tell you, size doesn’t matter. The most frustrating thing about the image that comes from the iPhone is the noise. Not audible noise, but digital grain. That, and it’s slow response time, and of course, the lack of control: apart from aiming the camera and depressing shutter button, the user doesn’t have any control over aperture (fixed at 2.8) focal length, shutter speed, or even ISO, which swings from ~70 into the 1000+ range as it wants. The 3Gs has a “press here to focus” option that does adjust the exposure, but seems to refocus as it sees fit afterwards, more taunt than feature.

IT’S A PHONE FOR CRYING OUT LOUD

The iPhone was never meant to be a camera in any sense of the word photographers would be confused by. It’s a telephone, the fact that it takes pictures at all is somewhat remarkable. But with the extreme credibility of nearly every other part of that device, it’s a bit wonderous that the camera is so bad.

The camera is so bad.

Which leads to…

THE CHALLENGE

One of the best ways to get an artist to do something is to tell them that they can’t.

The strongest feature that the iPhone has, as not only a camera, but a device in general, is the ability for people to program for it. Around the world photographers and programmers have gotten together to write apps that fill in the gaps where the phone fails. Some are goofy, some are powerful, some are downright clever. And together, this terrible phone and these clever people will meet to make something that is greater than the sum of it’s parts…

…Give us a lousy camera, and we will show you beautiful things.
