Really, it is! I like the look of soma fm, my favorite streaming radio station, liked their fonts and “borrowed” some of their CSS. The darker background, while not quite 18% gray, does show off images better than a white background.

I will definitely buy a soma fm t-shirt now.

(update: I’m switching back and forth between gray and white…)

People have data sitting on multiple social networks, search engines indexing their mail and serving up ads based on private content, and photos shared around the world on hosting sites. Each one of them has their own privacy policy, and each one requires you to have some level of trust that they’re going to protect your information, and if they get sold, will still protect it.

I’m tempted to go back to the way I did things pre-web 2.0. Host a box on my home network, host my mail there. Host my pictures there. Run my blog from there. The only issue I have now is that my provider blocks SMTP, as a “security measure”.

It takes a lot of time to host on my own, it was nice when I was consulting. Now, I’m not so sure. There’s more to break, more to get hacked, and more downtime when it does. Hard drives go south, power supplies fail.

I’m tempted to hack a SD card onto my Linksys router and use it as an endpoint.

Danny O’Brien has a good talk about this at OpenTech.

Widgets are great – they’re pre-made sidebar items that save me from having to hand-hack sidebar table entries. Most of my hesitation to switch templates was because I’d customized a template so much that it would take a lot of time to add the custom content into the new template. With Widgets, all of the customization goes along for the ride, so to speak.

I’m considering keeping this blog as a technical blog and splitting out my photos into a separate blog. Thoughts? I’d like to build an audience, and a personal / photo / work / technical / political blog seems a little too hard of a sell. A simple theme, a common thread, and links to related resources seems to be a common sense requirement.

I’ve got WordPress 2.0 up and running. I’ve got the new subscribe feature working. (Click on the “subscribe” button above to be notified by email when I update the ‘blog…). The new Akismet SPAM filter is catching 100% of my comment spam. The new backup/restore feature saves a copy of my MySQL database on my local drive. I set up XFN tags to differentiate people in my blogroll that I know personally versus sites I like to read.

I’m halfway through an upgrade of my photo gallery software, Gallery. The new version is MySQL driven and has many improvements over the previous version.

Dreamhost has been a wonderful web host through this upgrade – they have one-click installs of Gallery and WordPress, great control panel utility, responsive technical support people, they’re fast, and they’re cheap! Click on the previous link or the “powered by” button on the right to sign up with Dreamhost and give me a kickback…
