about me

So, who’s poindexter?

Poindexter FORTRAN is Kurt Weiske’s alter-ego. Or is it the other way around? poindexter FORTRAN (note the capitalization) ran a dialup BBS called “realitycheckBBS” from 1991 until 2000. When I joined lomo.us and other online services that promoted anonymity and handle use, I resurrected poindexter FORTRAN. for some reason, I standardized on “poindexter” in all lower case, “FORTRAN” all caps.

The original poindexter FORTRAN was a character played by Stan Winston in a Neal Foard play called “Wasted Youth” that performed at Menlo College in 1984. He was your typical taped-glasses, lambda lambda lambda-class nerd. I don’t know why I remember this.

Then, who’s this other guy?

I’m a forty-something networking consultant, weblogger, photographer, father, and the guy who feeds my dog. I’m always looking for ways to do things better, faster, motivate technical teams, write better, and make the most out of life.

Windows or UNIX?

FreeBSD was my OS of choice for servers, I like Ubuntu for desktops, think that Windows 2000 and Windows 95SR2 was a nice platform. XP is OK, Vista scares me. GEOWorks was awfully cool, I had a killer 386/40 running DR-DOS with it. BEos was killer, as was AT&T SYSV R 4.2.

Vista scares me.

Random Facts about me:

I have a retro streak and love 80’s haircut bands, old industrial music like Front242, FLA and Fortification55, and old-school cyberpunk authors like William Gibson.

Most of the time I’m working, I’m listening to dark, ambient, techno music - Harold Budd, Aphex Twin, Journeyman/Woob, Sensorama, Susumu Yokota, Autechre, John Beltran, Future Sounds of London, Global Communications…

I won’t have to worry about losing my hair for several decades.

My favorite science fiction author is Greg Bear.

I’m an avid Lomographer and I compiled the LOMO LC-A FAQ.

Since many LOMOs are sold with instructions manuals written in Russian, a FAQ is a good thing…

Hand-hacking web pages is the only way to go. It gives me a whole new appreciation for people who do this full-time.

I’ve given up on sporty two doors and inconvenient sports cars and own a Camry. It may not rock, but it’s how I roll.

My Current “Drugs” of Choice - Cafe La Llave espresso and cheap vodka.

Underworld — Cherry Pie (from the Majestic shoutcast stream) is playing while I write this.

Colophon:

Dreamhost hosts the site on their Linux servers. I use Wordpress to provide blog content and manage my blog entries.

The rest of the static content on this site was written with a variety of text editors, including vi, pico and Notepad. I used to pride myself on only using text editors for web design, but I’ve started using an older version of HomeSite for some layout work, since I can switch between a preview and editing mode.

I use Photoshop and IrfanView like a digital darkroom for sharpening, scanning and saving images to the web. I don’t do any hardcore retouching or adding/removing elements from my pictures, I’ve always thought that part of the thrill of photography was finding art out in the world. Creating an image in Photoshop that wasn’t there to begin with just doesn’t seem very fulfilling to me.

What do you shoot with?

I use a combination of cameras - a LOMO LC-A 35mm camera, Canon FTb and AE-1 Program film SLRs, several 35mm rangefinders, plastic cameras, and others. Over the years I’ve had a Canon S100 Digital Elph, an SD 110, SD 1000, Nikon D70, Nikon D40, and now a Canon EOS 40D. When I’m not carrying a real camera, I’m shooting with a Blackberry Pearl camera phone, Aiptek pocketcam/Pencam SD, or Stylecam Blink.

Thanks to Christian Void for this page layout. I hate tables.
